Title

HR Business Partner

The Role

You’ll be the HR business partner for a portfolio of IndeHR’s small-business clients.  You will deliver a measurable impact aligned to the client’s business plan.  You will seek and build a continuous understanding of your clients’ businesses.  With this knowledge you’ll use your expertise as an HR practitioner to help the client grow, establish employment practices that prevent problems and advise when issues arise.

Who You Are

You have at least 5 years of HR experience (7+ preferred) spanning the full range from supporting the general employee life cycle to executing strategy for the business objectives. You’ve worked with construction, trades, professional services, or similar industries and understand the operational realities and risks those businesses face. You’re practical, organized, and  confident giving direct recommendations to owners and executives. You are commercially-minded — energized rather than uncomfortable when a great client interaction turns into a referral, an expanded engagement, or a new opportunity for the firm.

Why Do This

Small business owners need real HR expertise. That’s where you come in — bringing experience and clear thinking to owners who’ve been managing HR on their own.

You’ll work across a portfolio of small businesses in construction, trades, professional services, and beyond. Your work will range from basic administrative support to high-level strategic advising — whatever each client needs at the moment.

This role is a fractional HR practitioner that functions as a consultant to clients.  This creates a unique and potential rich compensation structure.  In addition to base compensation and benefits, the role includes performance incentives tied to new business growth. When your client work earns referrals, expands existing engagements, or helps bring in new clients, you share directly in that upside. If you’ve ever wanted your relationships and reputation to translate into compensation, this is that opportunity.

You’ll join a small team that cares about doing this work well. If you want your judgment to matter and your week to vary, this is the right seat.

Your Responsibilities

  • Know your clients’ business, the key stakeholders within the business, and their strategic business objectives
  • Advise clients on employee relations matters: performance issues, terminations, investigations, accommodations, and policy questions
  • Build and maintain client HR infrastructure: handbooks, job descriptions, offer letters, performance management, and onboarding/offboarding processes
  • Coach client supervisors and managers through difficult conversations and day-to-day people decisions
  • Lead or support client HR projects: compensation reviews, organizational design, M&A integration, manager training, and engagement initiatives
  • Identify, create, and execute the HR priorities of the key stakeholders in alignment with the business plan
  • Support IndeHR’s growth by deepening existing client engagements, generating referrals, and participating in new business conversations — this role is incentivized accordingly
  • Coordinate with each client’s payroll provider, benefits broker, and outside counsel, escalating issues when appropriate
  • Maintain accurate client records and deliver clear, professional, and defensible written communications
  • Contribute to IndeHR’s internal playbooks, templates, and service standards
  • Document, track and quantify the impact of your work on your clients’ business plan
  • Create and continuously develop lasting roadmaps of engagement with your clients
  • Grow your portfolio of clients through collaboration with the managing partner, referral partners and a market presence

Your Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive HR experience required; 7+ years strongly preferred, spanning basic employee lifecycle administration through strategic business initiatives
  • Working command of U.S. employment law fundamentals: FLSA, FMLA, ADA, Title VII, and state-specific wage and hour rules
  • Strong employee relations experience, including terminations, investigations, and accommodations, with solid documentation practices
  • Direct experience supporting construction, trades, professional services, or similar small-business industries (typically 10–100 employees)
  • Clear, direct written and verbal communication, including the ability to deliver difficult messages with professionalism
  • Highly organized and self-directed; comfortable managing a multi-client workload
  • Fluent with common HRIS and payroll platforms and the document workflows that surround them
  • Discreet and trustworthy with sensitive information
  • HR professional certifications and credentials preferred; a desire for continuous learning required
  • Commercial mindset required — comfortable representing IndeHR in business development conversations and identifying opportunities to expand client relationships
  • Active, demonstrated use of AI tools in your regular work to improve efficiency and quality
  • Willingness to travel locally to client sites on occasion

Preferred skills

  • Experience building employee handbooks from scratch
  • Experience with BLR, HR Hero, and Monday.com
  • Intimate operational experience with small business payroll platforms: QuickBooks, Gusto, Rippling, Paylocity, ADP
  • Experience purchasing, managing and administering employee benefits to include retirement plan
  • Experience purchasing, implementing and optimizing payroll systems

Your Education

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Who We Are

IndeHR is on a mission to give small business owners impactful and measurable HR – the kind that helps them achieve their objectives and is aligned with their priorities. We do this by serving as the fractional HR team for small businesses that need senior HR expertise but don’t yet need (or can’t afford) a full in-house HR department.

We are a small but growing team — mostly remote — and a sister company to Independent Retirement, the 401(k) TPA firm. We believe in pursuing excellence, following through and keeping our word, doing it now, doing the right thing, and communicating, communicating, communicating.

High standards and great results matter. Treating our team members with compassion matters. And having fun while solving hard problems matters.
